You get tons of extra points for completely clearing colors from the board, which is far easier in the first 5 or so levels, so go for it if possible. Later on, think carefully before you tap. One correctly cleared chain can make the difference between being able to continue and game over. If anyone else has some tips, please post them here as well. I'd love to hear them!
