In its original airing, I thought DS9 hit the ground running in an awesome fashion; the first episode was very mind-extending. Watching the show now from 1st to last episode with my kids, I see the first season was pretty mediocre, though it did lay the groundwork for brilliant story lines to come.

There's an omission from your list that rather surprises me: Garak and his relationship with Bashir. The verbal prodding and jousting, the suspicion, and the genuine warmth between them made for one of the most intriguing relationships in the entire Star Trek franchise.

For me, DS9 has always been the crown jewel of the Star Trek universe. The best 7-year ride of any television series ever.

Thanks for the post. I thought I was the only one who liked DS9. The cast was great! I liked the stories much better than the predictable Next Gen.

DS9 has always been my favorite as well. It's the only Trek series that I've been collecting on DVD (though when TOS comes out on Blu-ray I'll be tempted). I've attributed much of what I like about it to the fact that staying in one place gave them the opportunity to explore things like Bajoran culture - things that the show was inherently about. All the other shows had no such initial, inherent direction.

I couldn't agree more. I've been a DS9 fan since it started airing (although it really did hit its stride in its second half), and I have often been surprised at people's general dislike of the series. Thanks for the write-up, I really enjoyed the list.

And now I might have to go watch it again…
