I totally disagree--the American remake of The Ring was way scarier, and the plot made much more sense. Japanese films tend to have way too open-ended of plots, and narrow-minded Americans like me need a much tighter storyline than that. Sad, but true. Plus, the American effects were much better. Can't discredit the Japanese version, though...wouldn't have the American version without it!

I found that the remake of The Ring was actually very good. I'm not one to endorse remakes — I think they're a mistake usually — but the US version has enough to set it apart from the original and is a flat out great film.

I haven't seen the Ring, but I would have included the original Hellraiser in the list. I'd squeak the Thing into it too, but then we are on our way to Ten flicks. ;-)

Thanks for the list. Great selections. I know a lot of people discredit Blair Witch, but I loved it. Lots of creepy scenes (like that baby crying at night) and a terrific ending.

Kilian: I'll have to check out the Japanese version of The Ring. The more Japanese horror I watch, the more I love it. "Audition" made my skin crawl and the twist was flat-out disturbing.

However, I did prefer the American version of The Grudge to the Japanese version (same director, incidentally). The sub-plot with the three school girls in the Japanese version seemed like a tangent.

Anyway, thanks Ged. Looks like I'll be driving to the video store.

The USA version of the Ring sucks. Watch the Japanese original and you have a pretty disturbing movie. Actually the TV series version (different actors) is even better, the ending however in is somewhat weak.

First time I saw The Ring was on DVD with friends. Within moments of the movie ending, the phone rang. We all pretty much jumped through the roof.
