the Empire vs. New Hope argument is one that has battled back and forth since the two films premiered.

Of course your entitled to your own personal tastes as far as Clones and Revenge go, but I dare say that you are in a very small, and distinct minority on that one

Before there were the ultra-crappy prequels there was this space opera for the ages. The first, best and only true Star Wars. The only thing that even comes close to Episode IV is Empire, but even that is a pale shadow of the original. May the Force be with us!

One, I fervently believe that EMPIRE is a lot better than A NEW HOPE. Two, I think that two of the Prequel movies – CLONES and REVENGE – are better than A NEW HOPE.

Which should tell you that our taste in STAR WARS movies is definitely NOT the same.

This was a pretty fun exercise, but I think I may have gone “overboard” with the deserted island thing I had a tough narrowing down my list, which is why I decided to pick my favorites from different genres. There were a lot of movies on every else’s lists that came close to being on mine.

Richard Corliss, a reviewer for Time, actually did pick porn for one of his guilty pleasures. I think that’s taking “guilty” and “pleasure” a little too literally.

I neglected to include any guilty pleasures on my list, but I can say that “The Karate Kid” would have to be one of them.

I went for Alien over Aliens, but I haven’t seen Aliens as many times – it’s possible I could be swayed the other way.

Pleasantville actually almost made my list. I love the uniqueness of that movie as well as Toby’s performance. The art direction is wonderful too, a real winner for sure.

As for Alien vs. Aliens, it comes down to which is easier to watch over and over again. Alien can be boring in some places I think. There are also some plot points that disconnect. They are both great movies however.

I wouldn’t touch the porn comment with a 10 meter cattle prod.

Good list.

I too immeadiately noticed 2001 missing and, like Dave, I would find also room for The Shining and Monthy Python and the Holy Grail. I’d also add Dreams and Pleasantville. I’d replace Aliens with Alien.

But I have a question: Am I on this deserted island by myself? ‘Cause, really, who wouldn’t pick some porn for their guilty pleasure in that case?

I recognized that our list only has flicks that are at least three years old. I think that is because to be really a great film, it has to be re-watched several times. There is only a handful movies that we can build a connection to that lasts past the credits.

So, here’s my adds: 2001 (best movie ever.), Airplane! (maybe for the guilty pleasures?), maybe Donnie Darko (but I have not re-watched it enough yet.), and absolutely everything by Aronofsky (if I have to pick, maybe Pi).
